About

SEAGLASS is a 2008 model, but was not completed or launched from the Sabre factory until 2010 due to the economic crisis. As such, her hull and all of her equipment show and function as younger than her model number implies.

If you’re in the market for a Sabre, or for any Downeast Express in this size and price range, SEAGLASS is an absolute must-see. Aesthetically and mechanically, she is the definition of a ‘Perfect 10’ with low engine-hours (mostly fresh-water), a meticulous open-checkbook maintenance program and continuous upgrades. These include 2019 repaint, 2020 stern thruster, 2020 canvas and much more. Since helping them purchase her from the Great Lakes in late 2019, I have spent many hours running this boat and consulting with the owner on projects, and I can say without exaggeration that she is one of the cleanest yachts I’ve had the pleasure of cruising and/or listing for sale. Her owners have loved her and enjoyed her regularly this past summer and are now looking to step up into a larger Sabre, as their cruising plans have evolved. I would challenge a buyer to look carefully at the specs of the other offerings on the market, and suspect you will find that SEAGLASS is the most competitive Sabre 38 currently available. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

The Sabre 38 represents the latest in yacht design and naval architecture, while maintaining the classic pedigree appeal of New England yachting and boatbuilding. Her timeless exterior profile still distinctly ‘Downeast’, and to back up the costume, she is built to the standards that the shipyards of Downeast Maine have always adhered to: Uncompromising construction methods, strong, stable and seaworthy hull designs, and absolute reliability.

The underbody lines are the latest thinking in Deep-Vee and modified-Vee motor yacht hulls. This design allows for supremely smooth, quiet, and dry running in nearly any weather. This particular 38, with the desirable factory-upgraded Yanmar 440 engine package, cruises along at 24 knots while easily achieving the coveted 1 gallon/mile fuel burn. I have personally documented this on SEAGLASS in many different conditions, with up to about 19 knots of wind with the accompanying surface chop. Her top speed is 30 knots, and she is well-behaved throughout the entire RPM range. Importantly, to add to that cruising comfort, Sabre's engineers have reduced noise and vibration levels substantially with a careful study of engine room ventilation and insulation.

This design is easily handled by a couple or even by a single-handed yachtsman/yachtswoman. She is extremely maneuverable with twin screws, spinning within her own length with fingertip movements on the electronic throttle controls. The bow and stern thrusters almost seem superfluous, as do pod drives, after you’ve driven this boat.

SEAGLASS will not last long on the market, so don’t hesitate to set up a viewing.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Down below, the fit and finish along with the creature comforts afforded by this Sabre might cause even a superyacht to blush, with her varnished cherry finish, built-in spice racks and backlit bottle storage. The Sabre quality and pedigree are evident in every corner and crease of the bespoke joinery and cabinetry and in the stunning teak and holly floor soles. All surfaces are finished with satin or semi-gloss varnish or lacquer, which highlights the woodwork beautifully without the unnecessary maintenance and expense of a deep-gloss finish. This makes for a warm and inviting interior aesthetic seldom found on modern production boats.

SEAGLASS offers a spacious master stateroom forward, with a partial-walkaround queen berth nestled between teak-slat side walls and louvered locker doors. There are overhead book shelves and cabinets, along with a large hanging locker to port, and full-size drawers to starboard. There is en-suite access to the head from the master cabin, on the port side. Privacy is afforded by a pocket door which neatly stows inside the bulkhead for space-savings in both the master cabin and salon area. A flat screen TV with DVD player is flush-mounted on the bulkhead. Natural light and ventilation are provided by a large opening hatch overhead, plus opening portlights on either side. All opening hatches and portlights are fitted with bug screens and blackout shades. Reading lamps are provided on the bulkhead above the bed.

Aft and to port of the master stateroom, the oversized head sports a surprisingly large stall shower with bench seat. This head opens both to the master stateroom forward and to the salon, meaning it can be used as either an en-suite or a day head. There is an overhead hatch to the deck along with opening port lights for natural light and ventilation. Hot water is provided via an 11-gallon tank that can be heated by either the engine coolant loop, or by a 110v element. The toilet is an electric push-button “Quiet Flush’ model from Jabsco. Ample storage is provided by way of cabinets behind and underneath the sink. There is a two-way exhaust fan built into the wall for dehumidifying the space. The space is also conditioned via a split-off from the aircon/heating ducting in the main cabin.

The main salon and the galley which is open to it are suitable to serve as an additional cabin, if required. The salon table drops down and converts to a double berth, with the addition of a cushion insert. In table mode, the settee is large enough to easily accommodate dinner for eight. Forward of the table is a 20” flat screen, LCD TV w/ DVD player, and just aft of is it the electrical control panel. There are cabinets with louvered doors and shelves with fiddles offering storage. The galley is equipped with a two-burner ceramic, electric stovetop built into the Corian counter top, with a fridge/freezer combo just underneath. The refrigerator may be powered by either 12V D/C or 120V A/C current for redundancy and for efficient energy budgeting. The stainless-steel sink basin is easily converted to additional countertop space by way of a circular Corian insert. There is a convection/microwave oven built into the cabinetry just forward and outboard. Cupboards with louvered doors offer plenty of storage for glasses, service ware, and cutlery, and the space underneath the sink accommodates cleaning supplies. There is a trash can built into one of the companionway stairs (which lifts up on a hinge) within arm’s reach of the sink. As with the stateroom and head, ample natural lighting and ventilation is provided via forward-opening deck hatches and side-opening portlights. A Seagull water purifier is installed beneath the galley sink.

  • All interior spaces are conditioned with reverse-cycle Climma heat/air/dehumidifier compressors. There are separate zones – each with their own control panel
  • Cantalupi flush-mount LED lights are used throughout the interior, as are 12V fans
  • Sound-deadening headliner panels are used per standard Sabre construction

HULL AND DECK

If you’ve had the pleasure of driving a Sabre, you already know that they are the definition of a balanced compromise – speed when you want it, stability when you need it, and a strong emphasis on passenger comfort no matter what. These boats are designed to deliver exceptional performance across all weather conditions while maintaining class-leading fuel efficiency and comfort.

BRIDGE DECK

In my opinion, SEAGLASS carries the best bridge deck in her class. With just a few zips, the space is easily converted from a fully protected and air-conditioned interior bridge, to an open-air, express-style ‘coupe’ for sunny days. The single 5” transition step from aft cockpit to bridge deck leaves the two spaces feeling very much connected – an essential quality for entertaining cocktail cruises or an evening on the hook with guests. But of course, on those chilly September nights in Maine, the hardcore cruising couple will appreciate being able to drive and lounge in the confines of a fully-enclosed and heated bridge. Did I mention the 360-degree visibility from the helm? This is not to be underestimated, especially while leaving or entering a marina slip.

A few notable features found in the bridge deck:

  • Large L-settee aft and to port for seating, with a small cocktail table that swivels
  • Twin STIDD helm seats – recently upholstered – one each for the captain and co-captain
  • A second mini-fridge to starboard boats a U-line icemaker
  • Above the mini fridge there is a small counter with sink that serves as a wet bar
  • Engine room access is provided through a large opening hatch in the bridge deck sole
  • The bridge deck floor sole is finished with natural teak decking
  • The forward windows on each side of the bridge deck slide open, as does the middle windshield
  • There is a sliding hatch with built-in screen and sun shade over each helm seat
  • 12V fans are mounted over each side of the dashboard for comfort
  • Built-in speakers in the bridge deck ceiling sync with the surround sound system
  • Built in chart and personal storage bin with clear Lexan hatch, hinged for access
