As the sailing season winds down in New England, it’s the perfect time for yacht buyers, sellers, and brokers alike to reflect on the region’s dynamic marine market. From boat shows to local regattas and a shift in the boating community’s focus, 2025 has already been a year of noteworthy developments in New England’s yacht industry. Among the highlights: the highly anticipated Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 new builds by Cockwells of the UK, which are generating a lot of buzz among both performance enthusiasts and luxury yacht buyers.

New England Boat Shows: A Strong Market Pulse

The Newport International Boat Show and Boston Boat Show proved once again that New England remains a hub for serious yacht buyers. This year’s events were packed with industry leaders showcasing new models, from sleek performance cruisers to state-of-the-art superyachts. Notably, the Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 from Cockwells grabbed attention for their stunning craftsmanship, innovative designs, and emphasis on performance.

Both yachts represent the perfect blend of British tradition and cutting-edge marine technology. The Duchy 27, designed for those looking for a luxury day boat with a sleek aesthetic, and the Duchy 35, a more substantial cruiser perfect for coastal adventures, are gaining attention among New England’s affluent yachting community. These new models highlight Cockwells’ expertise in creating bespoke, handcrafted yachts that marry form and function. The boats’ attention to detail and use of high-quality materials make them ideal for the discerning yacht owner.

Cockwells’ Duchy 27 & Duchy 35: A New Wave of British Excellence

While New England is no stranger to luxury yacht brands, Cockwells’ Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 have certainly raised the bar. These new builds are not only visually striking but also feature top-of-the-line performance specifications that appeal to both seasoned sailors and first-time buyers seeking a reliable, high-performance boat with luxurious finishes.

Duchy 27:
The Duchy 27 is a compact, performance-driven day boat designed for those who love to spend long hours on the water in ultimate comfort. This new build boasts a beautiful, minimalist design with a spacious cockpit that can easily transition from relaxing afternoons to active cruising. Its sleek lines are complemented by Cockwells’ reputation for building fast, responsive vessels. The Duchy 27 is ideal for those looking for a stylish yet practical yacht for coastal exploration or harbor hopping along New England’s iconic shores.

Duchy 35:
The Duchy 35 takes the design philosophy a step further, offering a more substantial, longer-range cruising option. With its luxurious interior, advanced navigation systems, and cutting-edge engineering, the Duchy 35 is perfect for those who want to venture further afield. Whether it’s cruising the quiet waters of Maine, taking in the scenic beauty of Nantucket, or heading to the sunny Caribbean, the Duchy 35 delivers both performance and comfort.

Record Sales and Rising Demand

In the last few months, New England has experienced a surge in yacht sales, particularly among high-end cruisers and performance yachts. Experienced brokers report that demand for top-tier brands like Oyster, Hinckley, Nautor’s Swan, and now Cockwells’ Duchy series has been especially strong, with buyers increasingly prioritizing luxury, comfort, and long-distance cruising capabilities.

What’s particularly exciting about the Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 is their appeal to a new generation of yacht owners who are looking for that perfect balance of elegance, performance, and sustainability. Cockwells’ dedication to building yachts that are both environmentally conscious and technologically advanced is resonating with today’s buyers.

Sailing Regattas: A Spotlight on Performance

New England’s regatta circuit is as vibrant as ever, with events like the Newport to Bermuda Race, Block Island Race Week, and the Yankee Cup drawing competitive sailors and enthusiasts from around the world. These events have proven to be an important aspect of the yacht market here, as they continue to highlight the region’s reputation for performance sailing.

For yacht brokers, it’s crucial to keep an eye on these events, as they influence the buying decisions of performance-minded sailors. While the Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 may not be built for the intense competition of a grand prix regatta, they are perfect for owners who want both a solid, responsive performance on the water and a boat that’s equally at home for casual cruising or coastal races.

The Shift Toward Modernization and Customization

In addition to performance and sustainability, there’s been a marked shift toward customization in yacht purchases. Many buyers now want yachts that reflect their personal style—whether it’s in the interior design, onboard technology, or unique features that tailor to their specific needs. The Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 are prime examples of how Cockwells can offer bespoke features tailored to the owner’s specifications, from customized interiors to advanced navigation and entertainment systems.

The demand for smarter technology is also on the rise, with many buyers investing in integrated navigation systems, autonomous capabilities, and luxury amenities that make yachting not just about getting from point A to point B, but about living the dream on the water.

Closing Thoughts

New England’s yacht market remains one of the most vibrant and diverse in the country. Whether you’re a buyer looking for a luxury cruiser or a seller eager to make the most of the region’s strong market conditions, understanding the latest trends—from eco-friendly designs to high-performance vessels—is crucial to making informed decisions.

The Duchy 27 and Duchy 35 from Cockwells add an exciting new option for those looking to invest in a yacht that delivers both style and performance. These British-built beauties are poised to make a significant impact on the New England yacht scene, offering new possibilities for those seeking elegance, customization, and luxury on the water.

NARWHAL is an iconic 48’ Cherubini Staysail Schooner. Her clipper bow with bowsprit, schooner rig, low freeboard and raised bulwarks aft, along with varnished teak cabin trunk sides, are reminiscent of L. Francis Herreshoff’s TICONDEROGA as interpreted by John Cherubini. She is a proven performer in near coastal waters, on the racecourse and crossing oceans. Her combination of shoal draft, spirited performance, a well-balanced helm and easy sail handling, along with drop-dead gorgeous lines, make her a true standout.

Like it or not, the cold weather has descended on the northeast. And while this means cozy afternoons watching football games for some, there is a hearty population who choose a bolder path.

Frostbite sailing is alive and well in Newport, RI. Every Sunday through April (holidays excepted), you can watch Laser Fleet 413 leaving the docks from Sail Newport at Fort Adams to jockey for position at the starting line. First race starts at 1 pm. Conditions can be sporty and tactics must be sharp, but the sailors are united in their passion for sailing and braving the elements.

Ted prepares to round the mark

From our very own Ted Hood, with close to 40 years of winter sailing under his belt in Narraganset Bay, “…It’s great camaraderie, great competition here among the local sailors. It keeps your sailing mind kind of fresh over the winter, so when spring comes, you’re a little less rusty. The quality of sailing and the fact that you can get out and sail once a week all year long is what makes Newport great.”

Seeking a new adventure (and if you’re lucky, some vitamin D)? Layer up, pack a hot drink, and come check out the local winter action!

Partner, Wellington Yacht Partners

It goes without saying that it has always been important to prep your boat before putting it on the market. Making sure it is clean, machinery is serviced, all equipment is working, and safety gear is up to date are all essential to having a smooth sale process.

In today’s market we are witnessing a new dilemma with the availability of replacement parts and qualified technicians. If you wait until your boat is under contract you may find yourself waiting eight weeks for that “heat exchanger”, or six weeks for an electrician to diagnose “why the radar is not working.” Buyers become impatient and move onto other options.

At Wellington Yacht Partners we are now advising owners to complete a thorough inspection of their boat, and in some cases a pre-survey to identify issues early, leaving enough time to get them repaired properly for market and a new buyer.
