Ted Hood

Ted grew up in Marblehead, MA, and found himself on the water from the day he was born. His father, Ted – a man of many talents, to say the least – routinely recruited Ted and his two brothers to race offshore at a very young age – creating certain maternal concerns, but providing a wonderful experience and opportunity for father/son “bonding.” Summer jobs while at school included sanding boat bottoms, sailmaking and apprentice draftsmanship. Ted also designed and built his own sailboard and ocean rowing shell, recalling how he once found Airex foam and fir strapping under the Christmas tree. This sparked a passion for furniture making and carpentry that he continues to enjoy today.

Following graduation from Brown University with an engineering degree, Ted began work at the Little Harbor design office as a draftsman for two years before moving on to marketing and business management responsibilities for the sale and construction of new Little Harbor yachts. After completing an MBA program in 1996, Ted decided on a career change of sorts by becoming a full-time yacht broker.

During the last twenty-four years, Ted has been involved in the sale of a wide variety of yachts, ranging in size from small express boats to several sailing yachts over 100′. He has also become involved in the conception and sale of several new construction projects with many reputable builders, including a 92’ and 108’ sailing yacht. Says Ted, “I thoroughly enjoy the direct contact I have with clients – listening to their needs, offering advice and following their adventures around the world. I personally feel that as a true “yacht consultant,” it is vital to preview boats for sale and to inspect potential builders whenever possible, requiring frequent travel throughout the U.S., Caribbean, Europe and New Zealand.”

His diverse sailing experience includes two trans-Atlantic races, numerous other offshore races in Europe and the U.S. and One-Design racing. He has also enjoyed countless cruises with family and friends throughout New England and the Caribbean and remains active racing today on large mega-yachts, cruiser/racers and one-designs (including Lasers during the winter in Newport). Ted is the Managing Director of Wellington Yacht Partners and lives in Newport, RI, with his wife Anne, while his two children are fully ensconced in their new careers. Other distractions for Ted include skiing, hiking, swimming, biking and carpentry.
