INTRODUCTION

The Oyster 53 just might be the best cruising platform in its size. With some 55 hulls sold, the model is well regarded as a benchmark in Blue Water Sailing circles. Features like robust hand-built construction, a bright and airy saloon, high freeboard, a roomy interior, protected cockpit, ease of handling and comfort at sea are all characteristics of the Oyster 53 design.

LUMA has the preferred 4 cabin layout and warm teak interior with teak and holly soles. She was built in the Windboats yard in the UK.

The owners of LUMA have enjoyed cruising on her throughout the Med and Caribbean. They pride themselves as being detail oriented and have made upgrades in all the right places for future sailing adventures.

DECK

INTERIOR ACCOMMODATIONS 

The interior woodwork is Satin varnished quarter sawn teak with selected high gloss trim. The joinery styling details are designed to be modern and co-ordinated while remaining practical and durable in use at sea, and feature sculpted fiddles and grab rails; shadow-gap joints between joinery panels; solid, shaped teak and stainless steel grab handles plus Oyster custom fittings for lockers and drawers. All drawers use metal runners which give extremely smooth operation. Custom teak and holly style cabin soles and edge-sealed with epoxy and coated on both sides with satin varnish. The sole boards seat on a rubber gasket, are removable and fitted with flush lifting rings. Interior upholstery and foam replaced (2022).

The interior arrangement allows for a maximum of 8 berths in 4 cabins, without using the saloon for sleeping, with 2 heads and showers. All sea berths have lee cloths and Oceanair "skyscreens" with shades on all deck hatches.

 

OWNER'S CABIN

Owner’s cabin aft is configured with a centerline queen berth, a curved settee and berthside table with bookcase above, a large hanging locker, abundant drawer and locker space, and en suite head with separate shower stall. The owner's aft island queen berth is fitted with a high quality battening system beneath the foam mattresses. Lee cloths are fitted down the center and both sides of the berth.  

En-suite head with Avonite countertop, shower stall, sink and locker storage. Electric Jabsco head with Commoderizer sanitation system. All faucets and VIP shower valve replaced 2023.

 

VIP CABIN

The forward guest accommodation includes a spacious VIP double cabin with centerline berth, small settee, plentiful clothes lockers, drawers under the berth, a hanging locker and overhead hatch

 

GUEST CABIN

Aft to starboard is a Guest bunk cabin with two single berths, hanging locker and storage under the bottom berth.

 

GUEST/DAY HEAD

The forward guest cabins share a large head to port, accessed from the passageway, incorporating Avonite counter top, a manual Jabsco toilet, washbasin, shower stall. Faucets and shower valves replaced 2023. SeaSmart auto toilet sanitation system.

Each head and shower compartment is fitted with a GRP lower molding with well radiused corners for ease of cleaning and hygiene. The aft shower cubicle is fitted with hinged doors, the forward shower has a curtain to separate it from the toilet and vanity.

 

MIDSHIPS CABIN

A fourth crew cabin, aft of the navigation center on the port side has two single berths currently used as a spares storage and tool room  

 

MAIN SALOON

The main salon features a large oval settee area to starboard with a pair of lockers and a central bookshelf outboard.  Custom “butterfly” oval table top with Madrona inlay and integrated grab rail. The salon table in its closed position, is mounted on a very substantial pedestal incorporating a bottle locker in its base and butterflies open to form a large full beam dining table. To port is a straight settee with storage underneath and a built in AEG washer in a cabinet forward. Above the washer cabinet is a custom bar unit that accommodates wine glass stowage, and Fusion stereo. The salon is extremely light and airy with seven windows of which two of the three forward open all with custom sliding curtains. Forward opening windows were replaced (2019). Large retractable screen and portable projector for watching movies.

 

NAVIGATION DESK

The navigation area is at the aft end of the port side of the saloon, and allows all instruments to be mounted in the optimum viewing position. The table can accommodate a half folded Admiralty chart and a bookshelf is built in outboard.  

The DC and AC service and breaker panel are located aft of the helm seat.

 

GALLEY

The passageway galley is located to starboard aft of the saloon, and is the access to the aft cabin. All galley work surfaces are Avonite. Stowage is provided for standard crockery. A custom spice rack. A harbor lock and stove bar are fitted on the stove; the freezer lid is insulated and finished with matching Avonite counter top. Box construction incorporates closed cell PVC foam with a vapor barrier and 4" of insulation.

ENGINE 
 

Yanmar 88hp diesel engine (4,524 hrs). Minor rebuild, painted 2021, new mounts, injectors, oil seals replaced. 

The engine is fitted with twin alternators; the standard Yanmar unit is a 55 amp 12 v alternator that is wired to charge the engine start batteries. The second unit is a high output 170 amp 24 v alternator that charges the domestic battery bank. Rebuild 2021. 

The engine instruments include alarms for low oil pressure and high water temperatures plus a rev counter, hour meter oil pressure and water temperature gauges.  

Aquadrive (new 2020) engine/shaft coupling in the engine room is fitted with a remote greaser at the aft end of the engine room.
